National Museum of the State Cultural Center of Turkmenistan
Ashgabat, the capital of Turkmenistan, is renowned worldwide for its stunning marble architecture and modern structures, many of which have become iconic landmarks. Among these is the National Museum of the State Cultural Center of Turkmenistan, a remarkable institution that stands out not only for its architectural grandeur but also for its rich collection of historical and cultural artifacts. Established as the first and largest museum following Turkmenistan’s independence, it officially opened on November 12, 1998, and has since become a symbol of the nation’s heritage and progress.
The museum is located on Archabil Avenue, nestled in the picturesque foothills of the Kopet Dagh mountains. Opposite the museum stands the tallest flagpole of Turkmenistan, proudly displaying the main flag of the country. The museum complex itself is a masterpiece of modern national architecture, covering approximately 15,000 square meters across three floors. Its central hall is crowned by a striking 16-faceted blue dome, symbolizing the 16 Turkic states founded by Turkmen ancestors, supported by 5 columns representing Turkmenistan’s five provinces (velayats).
In 2009, the complex expanded with the addition of two new buildings: the Museum of History and Ethnography and the Saparmurat Turkmenbashi Museum, seamlessly integrated into the overall structure and connected by a colonnaded open gallery.
The surrounding 105,000 square meters of landscaped grounds feature flower beds, fountains, and gilded statues of winged horses, creating a harmonious blend of nature and artistry.
The museum complex houses seven thematic galleries with over 166,000 unique exhibits, many of which hold significant historical and cultural value. The collections are divided into several key areas:
Museum of History and Ethnography:
– Displays ancient artifacts from archaeological sites such as Nisa, Merv, and Gonur.
– Features a collection of vintage Turkmen carpets, national clothing, jewelry, and antique weapons.
– Highlights include Parthian-era ivory rhytons, gold jewelry from Margiana, Buddhist artifacts, and a 270-million-year-old fossilized piece of wood.
– Other notable exhibits include dinosaur footprints and an 820-kilogram meteorite that fell in Kunya-Urgench in 1998.
Saparmurat Turkmenbashi Museum:
– Dedicated to the country’s recent history, this section showcases personal belongings of the presidents, gifts from state leaders, archival documents, and photo materials.
– It also includes artifacts related to presidential inaugurations.
Thematic Halls:
– Hall of Independence: Illustrates Turkmenistan’s modern development and displays gifts presented to Saparmurat Turkmenbashi, the nation’s first president.
– Hall of Ancient History: Features artifacts from early agricultural civilizations like Jeitun, Altyn-Depe, and Margiana, including flint tools, ceramics, and metal objects.
– Hall of Antiquity: Focuses on the Parthian Empire, with exhibits such as ivory rhytons, marble sculptures, and gold and bronze items from Old Nisa.
– Hall of the Middle Ages: Highlights the Sasanian era and the Seljuk Empire, showcasing Buddhist images, painted vases, and other medieval artifacts.
– Ethnographic Halls: Display traditional Turkmen carpets, national costumes, weapons, musical instruments, and handwritten books from the 18th to early 20th centuries.
– Hall of Nature: Exhibits mineral fossils, Paleozoic-era ammonites, and specimens of Turkmenistan’s unique flora and fauna.
Beyond its role as an exhibition space, the museum serves as a scientific research institute, dedicated to the acquisition, preservation, study, and promotion of Turkmenistan’s natural and cultural heritage. Its collections provide invaluable insights into the development of both nature and society in the region.
The National Museum of the State Cultural Center of Turkmenistan is more than just a museum; it is a testament to Turkmenistan’s rich history, cultural diversity, and architectural innovation. Whether you are drawn to its ancient artifacts, stunning carpets, or modern exhibits, the museum offers a comprehensive journey through the nation’s past and present, making it a must-visit destination in Ashgabat.
