Attractions of Mary
There are unique museums in Mary. For example, the museum of Turkmen carpets exhibits the works of masters who pass secrets from generation to generation. The ornaments and patterns of the carpets – Tekin, Ersarin, Iomud and Salor – differ from each other. There is also a historical museum in the city with a large number of archaeological monuments. And at the stud farm in Mary, one of the world’s most famous breeds of racehorses, the Akhal–Teke, is grown.
There is a protected historical and architectural zone “Bayramali” in Mary. It includes ancient settlements that were once the capitals of Merv. The most curious: Gyaur-kala (III century BC – VIII-IX centuries AD) with the remains of an ancient Buddhist monastery and a Christian church, Sultan-kala (IX-XII centuries), Erk-kala (I century BC), Abdullahan-kala (XV century) and Bayramalikhan-kala (XVIII century).
One of the main attractions of Mary is the mausoleum of Sultan Sanjar (1118-1157). The 40-meter architectural monument is crowned by a well-preserved dome.
Other attractions of Mary – the ancient fortress of Shazriar-Ark, the remains of the fortress walls of Kaz-Kala, ancient mausoleums and mosques – will not leave indifferent even the most sophisticated traveler.
There is also an Orthodox church in Mary, built in 1900. The Intercession Church is built of red brick in the traditional Russian style. And not far from the city there is a mosque-mausoleum of Talkhatan Baba of the XI century. It has reached our days almost in its original form.
The Gurbanguly-hadji Mosque is the main cathedral mosque of Mary Velayat. It was built in 2009 from white marble and named after the President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov. The mosque is decorated with four 63-meter minarets.
Not far from Mary is the ancient settlement of Durnali. The buildings of the IX-XII centuries have been preserved here, although the settlement itself existed much earlier. Archaeologists have found coins of the II-I centuries BC on the territory of the settlement. Near Durnali, 2 kilometers away, there are well-preserved parts of the Akuyli-Koushuk Castle. The entire first floor, built of mud brick in the Middle Ages, has been preserved almost completely. There is even a room layout left.
Mary Province (Velayat) and Mary City: A Tapestry of Ancient Splendor and Modern Vitality
Nestled in the southeastern expanse of Turkmenistan, Mary Province (Velayat) spans 87,000 km², blending stark desert beauty with profound historical legacy. At its heart lies Mary City, a vibrant urban hub founded in 1884 by Russian military strategists, now home to over 200,000 residents. The province is a land of contrasts, where the world’s second-largest gas field, Galkynysh (26.2 trillion m³), fuels modern prosperity, while ancient civilizations whisper tales of a storied past
Historical Significance: The Cradle of Civilizations
Mary Province’s crown jewel is Ancient Merv, a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognized as Central Asia’s largest archaeological treasure. Once known as Margush or Margiana, this oasis city was a crossroads of cultures, rivaling Mesopotamia and Egypt. Recent discoveries, including Buddhist artifacts like a Buddha head and Sanskrit manuscripts, underscore its role as a spiritual melting pot. Archaeologists herald Margiana as the “fifth ancient civilization,” reshaping historical narratives of the East. The site’s sprawling complexes—Erk Gala, Sultan Gala, and the awe-inspiring Sultan Sanjar Mausoleum (a 40-meter marvel of medieval architecture)—attest to its zenith under Seljuk rule. Nearby, Gonur Depe, the Bronze Age capital, reveals Zoroastrian roots, cementing the region as a cradle of early religion.
Natural Wonders: Badhyz Reserve’s Surreal Landscapes
The Badhyz State Nature Reserve, a ecological gem, boasts the Yeroylanduz Depression, a salt-crusted basin 500 meters below sea level. Once submerged by the Tethys Sea, its fossil-strewn plains and extinct volcanic domes offer a geological wonderland. Spring transforms Badhyz into a painter’s palette: crimson poppies, golden ferula, and white eremostachys blanket the steppe, creating a fleeting yet unforgettable spectacle.
Economic Powerhouse: Energy and Agriculture
Mary Province drives Turkmenistan’s economy through the Galkynysh Gas Field, a global energy titan, and fertile cotton fields. Mary City, the provincial capital, is a nexus for these industries, its prosperity etched in modern infrastructure juxtaposed against timeless traditions.
Mary City: Where Past Meets Present
Founded near ancient Merv, Mary City harmonizes heritage with modernity. Key attractions include:
– Museums: The Turkmen Carpet Museum showcases intricate Tekin and Salor designs, while the History Museum displays artifacts from Margiana’s heyday.
– Equestrian Heritage: The Akhal-Teke horse, famed for its elegance, is bred at Mary’s stud farms, symbolizing Turkmen pride.
– Architectural Marvels: The Gurbanguly-hadji Mosque (2009), with its soaring 63-meter minarets, contrasts with the 11th-century Talkhatan Baba Mausoleum, a Seljuk-era masterpiece. The Intercession Orthodox Church (1900), a red-brick relic, nods to the city’s Russian origins.
– Nearby Treasures: Explore Bayramali’s fortress ruins, Durnali’s medieval remnants, and the enigmatic Akuyli-Koushuk Castle.
Cultural Legacy: Scholars and Poets
Medieval Merv was a beacon of learning, hosting luminaries like mathematician Al-Khwarizmi, poet Omar Khayyam, and polymath Al-Samani. Their legacies permeate the region, alongside spiritual landmarks like the Hoja Yusup Hamadani Mosque, a pilgrimage site.
Mary Province and its eponymous city offer a journey through millennia—from Zoroastrian temples and Silk Road splendor to gas-fueled modernity. Whether marveling at Merv’s ruins, trekking Badhyz’s volcanic plains, or admiring Akhal-Teke steeds, visitors encounter a land where history breathes and nature dazzles. A testament to resilience and reinvention, Mary invites the world to uncover its layered mysteries.
